Royal Mail door drops

Mid/late October is the earliest date that bookings can now be placed with Royal Mail D2D and if you are yet to finalise your pre Christmas marketing activity, we would urge you to think about it without delay.

October/November historically has been a door drop industry peak season and with the Royal Mail door to door service guaranteeing brand, service or product exclusivity within any one week’s mix of items, can you afford to miss your prime timing slots?

We have experienced several situations recently where we have been forced to book clients’ activity over multiple weeks to achieve the required postal sector coverage and we would predict that this situation can only deteriorate.

Royal Mail door to door has declared that normal service will be available throughout the Festive Season, including w/c December 24th.

Free newspaper publishers have yet to announce their publication availability, but we would predict that there is likely to be little coverage available w/c 24/12, but that pretty much full coverage will be available w/c 17th & 31st.

Both Royal Mail and free newspapers will most likely tweak their normal bulk supply delivery deadlines for those three weeks, so if you are planning at activity at that time, take advice from us on these deadlines.

If you are a client whose promotional activity has that January Sale feel about it, be warned that w/c December 31st could be high volume week for Royal Mail and free newspapers.


We are pleased to announce that CN Letterbox (Cumbrian Newspapers) have become the latest free newspaper publisher to provide their round data to us, to facilitate the provision of sub sector door drops in Cumbria.

We are doubly delighted because we are the first, and currently only, door drop supplier who can provide that service in Cumbria and sitting alongside the SMART-Drop solus service, means we have a truly unique offering in this area!

Earlier in the year we published a couple of fascinating articles from Rick Pullan @ TBDA about door drop couponing and sampling, which can be found on our website by clicking the link.

This month we are delighted to welcome a contribution from Penny Dryden, Commercial Director at Valassis who identifies an increase in coupon redemption levels and talks about the importance of planning door drop activity and being able to gain insight from redemption data.

And, very hot off the press, Valassis have kindly provided us with the new redemption rates by media chart.

Door drop looks to be a strongly performing medium in comparison to many of the other media listed and we will comment more on that shortly.

DMA update

The long awaited 2011 Door Drop statistics, quietly appeared on the DMA website on September 7th, with no announcement or comment.

Key points to arise could be summarised as:

An 11.8% drop in volume in comparison to 2010 to 6.97 billion items.

Expenditure on door drops decreased by 1.4% in the same period to £256m (door drop delivery costs only).

The average number of weekly items per household is 5 (but can vary by area).
